The legacy of Detroit-style pizza began at Buddy's Rendezvous Pizzeria, on Six Mile and Conant Streets, on the east side of Detroit, when in 1946 Gus Guerra and Concetta “Connie” Piccinato prepared their first square-shaped pizza. Detroit-style pizza, a descendant of Sicilian-style pizza, has its roots in one man: Gus Guerra. In 1946, Gus owned what was then a neighborhood bar, Buddy's Rendezvous, when he decided he needed something new for the menu. He enlisted the help of his wife, Anna, who borrowed a pasta recipe from her Sicilian mother.
Sicilian dough, topped with cheese and tomato sauce, would become the model for pizza in Detroit. Detroit-style pizza was invented in 1946 by an Italian immigrant named Gus Guerra, although the exact details are controversial. What can be accepted is that Guerra invented the style while trying to add new elements to the menu of his neighborhood bar, Buddy's Rendezvous. However, he sold Buddy's and founded Cloverleaf Pizza in East Detroit (now Eastpointe), so both restaurants now claim to be the creators of Detroit-style pizza.

The characteristics of pizza (the soft and airy square crust, the crispy outside, and the caramelized cheese that borders the pizza) are all due to the deep pans in which the pizzas are baked.
